Central City is a small community that lost its only movie theater in 2013. Since then, residents wishing to enjoy a night out at the movies have to drive approximately 25 miles to a theater, which is usually a large multiplex, void of character.

The State Theater will provide the residents of Central City and surrounding communities with a unique, intimate setting, while preserving the century old movie theater.

The State Theater is located in the historic building, once known as the Martha Ellen Auditorium, built in 1916 which was the scene of musical concerts, operas, vaudeville performances and classics.

This is a "community owned" theater operated by local volunteers that have the skills and expertise to make this theater succeed. The State Theater Foundation board members have movie theater management experience.

With donations from the community and Go Big Give, the State Theater replaced the marquee, updated the furnace and the AC unit, finished the brickwork and added stucco, installed new carpet and aisle lights, replaced sconces and built new ADA restrooms, redesigned the lobby and ticket booth. We have also updated the entrance to all glass and changed the windows in the office. Our next project is remodeling the office and updating the stage.
